Gold remodelling- What do I need to know?
Why would I remodel old gold instead of buying something new?
Because old gold holds stories.
It might be a wedding band worn every day for decades, a piece inherited from someone you love, or jewellery that no longer fits your life but still carries meaning.
Remodelling allows those memories to live on in a piece you’ll actually wear, something made for you, now.
Can my old gold be melted down and reused exactly as it is?
Not quite—and that’s important to understand.
Gold that’s been worn for many years has absorbed tiny traces of daily life: skin oils, dirt, polishing compounds, solder from past repairs, and sometimes unknown metals. While it can absolutely be reused, it needs a little help to become strong and reliable again.
Why does fresh gold need to be added?
When remodelling old gold, we usually add approximately 10–20% fresh gold to the original metal.
This strengthens the final piece and helps the gold cast and set properly. Fresh gold improves durability, reduces the risk of weakness or porosity, and ensures your jewellery is made to last, not just look beautiful on day one.
This step isn’t about replacing your sentimental gold, it’s about supporting it.
Will all of my original gold be used in my new piece?
Your gold will absolutely be part of your new jewellery, but it’s important to know that some metal loss is unavoidable during the remodelling process.
Gold is lost during:
-
Casting (through oxidation and sprues)
-
Finishing and polishing
-
Setting and refining where required
This is a natural part of traditional jewellery making and happens even in brand-new pieces.
Does that mean my new piece will weigh less?
Often, yes.
Because of unavoidable loss and finishing, the final piece may weigh slightly less than the gold supplied.
This doesn’t affect the value, beauty, or integrity of your jewellery- its just part of the process and affects only the physical weight.
What if I don’t have enough old gold for my design?
That’s completely okay. Additional gold can be supplied and seamlessly blended in to achieve your desired design, thickness, and strength.
Your piece will still carry the sentiment of your original gold just reinforced with what it needs to be wearable long-term.
Is remodelling old gold safe for engagement or everyday rings?
Yes, when done properly.
That’s why fresh gold is added, why allowances are made for loss, and why shortcuts are never taken. Rings worn daily need strength and integrity above all else. The goal is a piece you can love and wear for decades, not something that’s fragile or compromised.
Is remodelling more about sentiment or efficiency?
Sentiment, always.
Remodelling old gold is not the most metal-efficient process—but it is one of the most meaningful. Every decision is made with longevity, craftsmanship, and respect for your materials in mind.
What’s the most important thing to know before remodelling my gold?
That the aim isn’t to use every last gram—it’s to create a piece that honours where the gold came from and ensures it will stand the test of time.
Your story deserves more than shortcuts.
